This is the current Edition's Eldar tactics. The Aeldari Eldarare all about elegance, efficiency, finesse, style, and precision, and are basically alone in this aesthetic among the races of Warhammer 40, In the game, the Eldar are a fast army with great guns, awesome toys and the resilience of strawberry shortcake.

Each unit plays a very particular role, usually, everyone in a squad has the same gun and the squad as a whole aims for one goal, as opposed to squads of dudes each toting a different gun for a different kind of foe.

This can help new players by not forcing them to keep all of a squad's weaponry in mind, but it also requires you move the right squad for the job to the right place, which can be tactically challenging.

An ill-positioned Eldar squad has a greater chance of doing nothing than those of other armies. Some units, like Jetbikes, overcome this disadvantage with superior speed and mobility.

This is huge in a game where most of the missions are about capturing objectives. If you are the kind of elf who likes it when a plan comes together, you might be tactical enough to lead the Eldar to their victory upon the battlefield.

This can easily be worked around by simply taking these units in a separate detachment, and this rule does not apply for Narrative or Open Play games. The Craftworld army is divided under several major keywords of note, each with a variety of specialized perks associated with them. For convenience, the major keywords and their associated units are listed in the table below. The Asuryani units not listed here fall under the Warhost keyword, which just kind of Introduced in the Vigilus Defiant campaign, several "sub-factions" were made available for players wishing to create specialized, thematic armies while rewarding them with unique tactics and abilities.

Any battle-forged Asuryani detachment can be chosen to become either a Windrider Host or Wraith Host at the cost of 1 CP, with all applicable units gaining the respective host keyword associated with them. Do keep in mind; Ynnari detachments are ineligible for these specializations per the recent FAQ, so plan accordingly. These are the classic, original Craftworlds that you may select for Your Dudes.

While they are certainly less customizable that the build-a-craftworld attributes listed further below, these have the benefit of unique Stratagems, Relics and named Characters that are otherwise unavailable to you.

More elaborated unit recommendations can be found in the Army Building section. Remember that your Ynnari or Conclave units don't gain any benefits from these. Like the Space Marines' Successor Tactics, the Eldar can now create their own Craftworld Attributes by combining any two of the following 22 attributes from the Phoenix Rising book to truly make a Craftworld of Your Dudes. Named Characters must take the Craftworld Trait associated with their Craftworld. For example, if Eldrad is your Warlord, he must take Fate Reader.

Phoenix Lords also cannot take a Warlord trait, so there is no longer a reason for having one of the Craftworld Eldar's legendary heroes and personifications of an aspect of Khaine, heroes that entire Craftworlds rally around in times of need, lead your army. Only dorks with wings and people with mind bullets get to lead the army now. These are very specific traits which can be taken by applicable Warlords within their Specialist Detachments. While they can be quite potent, they do only apply towards units with the respective Specialist Detachment keyword, meaning you'd have to very specifically design your army around these traits to take full advantage of them.

If you can spare 1 CP and still want a regular trait for your warlord, you may use the Field Commander stratagem to give one of your HQ units within a Specialist Detachment the respective trait associated with it. It is not possible to be prepared for an explicit tactical objective. For most cases, achievement is purely situational.

However, in some cases there are some tricks to make achieving them easier. Standard strategems that can be used by any and all Craftworlds, though Ynnari detachments are now exempt from using these. Aspect Warrior Stratagems Each of these nine stratagems are dedicated to one of the nine standard Aspect Warrior Shrines.

Eldar vehicles, unlike their infantry counterparts, are very tough and hard to kill because of many evasive and shielding benefits.

While no Eldar vehicle has the maximum armor value 14they often have upgrades and special abilities which can compensate for this and make them more effective than heavier vehicles. Most Eldar vehicles can also be equipped with weapons designed for various purposes. Some examples include the Brightlance designed for killing Heavy Tanksthe Star Cannon designed to kill Heavy Infantryand the Scatter Laser designed for killing light infantry.

With the exception of walkers, all Eldar vehicles are skimmers which allow them to move "freely" across the board and, with upgrades, at speeds only matched by the Dark Eldar and the Tau armies.

The drawback is that Eldar vehicles are expensive to field in game. An example is the Eldar Wave Serpent, which is one of the most-expensive dedicated transport vehicles in the game. Because of the Eldar's comparatively weak armor and high fielding costs but comparatively powerful weapons and fast speed, successful game play is often stylized by outnumbered Eldar units which outmaneuver the opponent and kill entire squads before they have a chance to retaliate.

This is also the cause of Eldar game play being regarded as "unforgiving". Unlike Space Marines or Necron, who boast heavy armor, high toughness and some form of wound-resistance; the Eldar do not. Because of this lack of staying power, Eldar infantry is often subject to severe, and sometimes unrecoverable, losses after a bad tactical decision or even a series of poor rolls.

Millions of years ago, the Eldar once ruled the galaxy. After the defeat of the Necrons and the decline of the Old Oneswith no serious enemies to challenge them or labors to burden them, they became the solitary masters of the galaxy. However, over the course of millennia, the unchallenged Eldar fell into the most extreme kind of decadence imaginable. Because the Eldar are highly psychic, this behavior led to the creation of the Chaos God of excess and hedonism, Slaanesh.

When Slaanesh was finally born c 30th millenniumthe psychic shockwave killed most of the Eldar race. Truly gargantuan in size, these Craftworlds were capable of housing hundreds of thousands of Eldar and their technological wonders, and would become their refuge from the turbulent times to come.

While some craftworlds did not get far enough to escape the psychic shockwave, others did. The remaining Craftworlds are now spread around the galaxy; massive holofields, advance stealth systems, and the vastness of space itself, has largely masked their presence and only a few have become known.

The majority of the normal infantry and vehicles as described in the Games Workshop Codex books for the Craftworld and Dark Eldar are available as plastic or "fine cast" resin kits via either the company's many high street stores or by their mail order service. Some limited edition models have been produced for the Craftworld Eldar, although as of Februarythese are only available as the old style 'lead' casts on the open market.

The company Games Workshop does supply to independent retailers. Also, a few of these distributors whose primary focus is tabletop wargaming can order the more-complex resin kits from Forge World. Both companies have websites from which online purchases can be made.

Because the Eldar are one of the original races featured in the 40K universe they have an extensive back catalogue of classic lead and plastic miniatures including many variants of squads, squad leaders and infantry models which can still be found on sale both in store and online for those with the patience to search.

Well, planets come in all shapes and sizes, so it wouldn't tell you much to say yes or no. I seriously doubt that any are as large as, say, planet Earth. I would imagine that they're bigger than a Death Star. Long story short? They'd be big enough that if one were to crash into a planet, it would impact with the force of an asteroid and be completely obliterated, leave a Hudson Bay sized crater in the planet's crust, and fallout from the resulting expulsion of matter into the atmosphere would plunge the planet into darkness for centuries, killing all life on the planet and making it completely inhospitable.

I also don't know if the book is considered fluff. Black Library books are usually taken with a pinch of salt. It is my opinion that the official fluff generally avoids the size of a craftworld like the plague because the logistics for it are hard to add up. If you were to assume that a craftworld was the size of a city such as London, and then consider how built up they are in all the pictures you'd be talking a populations of multiple millions.

I'd say this size was an underestimate due to both the size of general imperial battleships, and the fact they are known as craftWORLDS so are likely to be at least moon sized. A moon sized craftworld, built up in a way the pictures show, even with large gardens etc, and parts inaccessible from damage etc would still easily hold a population of billions I've always thought that If this was widely discussed in the fluff it would kill the idea of a 'dying race'.

In comparison to the billions upon billions of humans there are, there are few eldar, but billions of eldar on many craftworlds does not make a dying race.

Just because the craftworlds are huge doesn't mean they're densely packed like a modern day metropolitan area. And we really know nothing of how much space on a craftworld the wraithbone framework and core take up. Most of the space on a craftworld could be taken up by supplies, war materiel, power cores, warp gate generators, farmlands, atmosphere generation, etc.

And comparatively speaking, even billions of Eldar on dozens of craftworlds can still be considered a "dying" race if the Eldar empire was previously spread throughout the galaxy on millions of worlds with billions each. Take the numbers with a grain of salt. These numbers were made up to make a point, not because they've been quoted anywhere.

Plus, just because it can hold a population of billions doesn't mean there are billions living there. I think a huge population capacity that just doesn't have the population to fill it is actually more evocative of a dying race that a small population in a small space.The chances are these names conjure an image of what you would expect to see in an army from any of these craftworlds, and what it might look like. This is the result of branding.

Each of these craftworlds has a very specific set of units associated with it, a playstyle, and a paint scheme. While it would be possible to play an Iyanden army that was coloured entirely red and included no Wraithguards or Wraithlords, most people would not identify this as an Iyanden force and may even argue with you that it is not.

When designing your own craftworld, think about the image, the units, and the fighting style that would represent it. While the five major craftworlds mentioned above have the advantage of print media publication, making them recognisable throughout the gaming community, whereas your craftworld probably will not receive such a benefit.

This means that your craftworld is going to need some distinguishing characteristics if you want people to recognize it when they read about it in your article. Furthermore, unless your craftworld descends from one of the 'big five' craftworlds, it will need something to set it apart, so that others do not mistake it for one of those forces.

Craftworlds are vast, planetoid-sized spacecraft populated by the highly advanced humanoid species known as the Eldar, effectively worlds in space, each a self-contained biosystem. They travel through the void of space at sub-light speeds, carrying the greater remnant of the Eldar race after their Fall. Each craftworld is a self-sufficient, independent realm with its own culture, economy, and military.

Every Craftworld is built upon a skeleton of Wraithbone whose structure extends throughout the gigantic voidcraft. A similar skeletal core lies at the heart of most Eldar constructions and every one of their spacecraft.

In function, this core is similar to the blood vessels and nervous system of a living creature, pumping life-giving energy around the body and also transmitting the psychic impulses that coordinate its many functions. Wraithbone is psycho-conductive, and the core of a Craftworld acts as a self-replenishing reservoir of psychic power. The invasive rib-like structures carry this energy throughout the entire length and breadth of the vessel. In a very real sense, the Craftworld is a living entity, powered by psychic energy and responding in an organic way to the stimuli of psychic forces.

The power contained within it can be expended as light and heat, and most ship-board devices could not actually function without the wireless psychic power grid that runs throughout the substructure of the Craftworld. The Eldar refer to this grid as the Infinity Circuit, a metaphysical neural structure studded with the Spirit Stones of the Craftworld's dead, their gestalt psychic collective serving as the source of the great vessel's power--and its ghostly sentience.

Which I guess you probably could already, but this makes it easier with shared keywords and whatnot.

Ynnari playstyle is reckless. Most of the time it puts you in a position to take chances and generally get tabled by a savy opponent. With the emphasis on hordes and fast assault you will see Ynnari armies raped left and right. Regular eldar have a stronger, faster playstyle. You get all most the same units other eldar do, not prevents you from playing conservatively if you wish to.

Meaning if you are close enough to get the benefit your eldar army is generally already screwed. Plus the army is slower, as it no longer benefits from battle focus. Eldar aren't bad in close- the Wraithlord, Wraithknight, Harlequins, Wraithguard, Banshees, Scorpions, etc, all attest to this.

It's not always ideal to be next to the unit when it dies, but it's not crippling, either. Ynnari didn't have Battle Focus before, either- that was always part of the deal, to lose it in exchange for SfD.

Eldar won't- can't possibly- be as dominant as they were before, but I'm not yet convinced that they aren't still a top-tier army. Many of their best units stayed very similar Warp Spiders, Windriders or got changes that were in many ways a wash Wraithguard, D-Cannon. We'll certainly see a different sort of Eldar than before, but they may well still be a contender. That sounds like good internal balance if you ask me.

It makes them overall a bit less survivable, though more resistant to Boltguns and other basic weapons that were their bane before. The changes to morale also mean no more skittering off the table after losing one model. However, losing JSJ, changes to other unit speeds, and many other factors make them overall weaker, I think.

Still far from bad, but not going to dominate the game the way they once did.
